Tub or Luxury Shower Stall
Can you take out a tub and install a luxury shower stall instead? Absolutely you can do that! The biggest problem you’ll have is moving the shower drain to the center of the area, but if the drain pipe runs under the tub that should be easy. But is this what you want to do?
This will depend on the use of the bathroom. If it’s the main bathroom of a house it might not be the best idea. But if it’s a master bedroom or a 1-bedroom condo it could be just right touch.
We are not talking about putting in one of those tiny prefab shower stalls. Did you ever see them? They are functional but there’s not much in the way of aesthetics there, and in 10 years you’ll have to replace it. But a custom built and tiled shower stall is another matter, and it can be a thing of beauty!
Choose a Tile Design
Your biggest challenge is to pick out a tile design for the walls. Try to include a row or two of decorative tiles, maybe a row of pencil, 3-inch-high or crown tiles, possibly in combination.
Look at some shower stall tile designs online and get some ideas. Then put something together, you know, just like picking out clothes that match. Think of colors and patterns and even textures.
When it comes to the shower stall floor, you’re going to want smaller tiles, as you can see in the sample photos. The smaller tiles allow the floor tiles to be easily slopped towards a low point at the center for the drain.
Choosing Tile Material
There are many materials from which to choose, ceramic, porcelain, marble and other natural stone materials. But your best choice for a shower stall will be ceramic or porcelain because natural stone has to be sealed and will stain. If it isn’t maintained you’ll get stains, very bad. Ceramic and porcelain are impervious to water and won’t stain either.
You’ll also want to determine what shower hardware you want, including faucet and head styles. Some people require a special wand shower head that can be used when seated. Also consider where you’ll want to place handles or grab bars at this time rather than after the installation is completed, so they can be properly braced and installed.
Accent Tile Pieces
Also consider corner seats and shelves along with possible insets and their placement. It’s nice to pick a tile material that has some of these features available, that is, shelves, seats and crown pieces. Along with accents, you can find special edging pieces, yielding a variety of coordinated pieces.
Finalizing the Details
It will also be necessary to have the glass shower doors you’ve chosen on hand so the job can be completed. The whole installation project will take approximately 2 weeks to complete before you’ll be able try it out. And don’t forget either the lighting upgrades or fan in the shower or nearby area.
Adding Value to Your Home
A properly tiled shower area adds $$$ to the value of your home and provides a touch of class to the bathroom as well. You can expect to pay several thousand dollars and more to have your tub converted to a luxury shower stall, but depending on the use of the bathroom it could be a sound investment.
